Backlit images are some of my favorites.
It doesn't always work out as you need a clear silhouette, unobscured by other dark elements that may make the animal blend in too much.

A young bull bison poses in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley.
I made this image at 500mm in order to keep a safe distance and to blur the fore- and background. Bending down to be at eye level is definitely one of the best tips for wildlife photography, to create a sense of intimacy.

Who can say 'no' to a cute coyote pup?
This little one was so curious, it walked up to my big lens while I was laying at the ground to get to the pup's eye level.
Taken at the equivalent of 750mm focal length, it's surprising how quickly they fill the frame, and, how limiting a fixed prime lens is with no ability to zoom out!
