Black Bear Encounter

Do you want to learn how to take better wildlife pictures?
Here's my book to get you started

Upon returning to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton area this fall season, I decided to go for a hike to see what I could find.

I was hoping to spot elk and it didn't take long before I heard the amazing sound of bugling come out of the forest.  As I went into silent mode, I came to about 100 yards from the elk herd lead by a big bull.

As I was taking pictures, I spotted movement in the forest about 50 yards from the elk herd.  Two black bear cubs!

The two cubs were seemingly oblivious of the elk herd's presence and also had no idea I was hiding out a good distance past the elk.  The elk seemed to have no clue either that the two bear cubs were heading their way as the wind came from the wrong direction.

The two cubs walked on by - without ever seeing me or the elk - soon followed by mom.  She of course noticed all the commotion nearby of the bugling elk; then spotted me and decided to get a better look at me!

She stood up and looked at me for a few seconds through the brush.  After she saw I was harmless, she continued on her way, eating grasses and berries.  Nonetheless, I had my bear spray ready ... you never know; it was a momma bear with two small cubs after all!

What is the recommended way to react when you come across a bear? My latest article was published: in it I interview Jason, the wildlife biologist for the Bridger-Teton National Forest (which is part of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem) and the bear expert and trainer for the forest service. Read the interview here.

Here is the Amazon link for the bear pepper spray that I own and recommend:
Counter Assault - EPA Certified, Maximum Strength & Distance Bear Repellent Spray - Hottest Formula Allowed by Law - Night Glow Locator & Tactical Holster Included (10.2 oz)
It's a small investment that provides peace of mind and might save your life!
