Teton Bugle

September and October signal the time for one of my favorite wildlife spectacles in the US: the elk rut!

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is home to many elk, including one of the most famous elk herds in the country: the Jackson Hole herd.

Famous for spending their winters on the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming, these elk spread out during summer and virtually disappear into the surrounding forests.

Until September ... when the sounds of male elk bugling come out of the forest, signaling the start of the elk mating season (or 'rut').

One of my favorite places to find elk during the rut is Grand Teton National Park.  Here's a big bull making his voice heard!
