Inside the Nest

This past summer in Southeast Alaska, I had the pleasure of being able to observe a nest of Swainson's thrush. How fun it is to watch the parents leave the nest and upon returning with beaks full of berries or insects, be greeted by hungry mouths!

These medium-sized birds spend the summer as far north as Canada and Alaska. In winter, they head south to the warmer climates of Mexico and all the way to Costa Rica. Talk about a long journey twice a year.

Barely a few weeks after hatching, these three young left the nest.  I was grateful to watch them grow up. Every time a parent returned with food, all three young sprung alive and it's as if they were all shouting "Me! Me! Me!."
