Gloomy Day Moose

November 09, 2023  •  Leave a Comment

Once the mating season is over in October, the moose start to hang out in groups again.

I hiked out into the sagebrush field one afternoon to find 9 moose hanging out together.

Now, moose can be quite temperamentful, so I always like to be near a tree (to hide behind) when photographing them.

In this case, however, it was just me and an open field filled with moose.

The young bulls were play-sparring and chasing each other so I always had to have eyes in the back of my head.  Young bulls get pushed around by the bigger bulls, so some young ones may feel empowered to take on the small human!

This big bull observed the small ones but kept an eye on the only cow moose in the group.  When the cow mates during mating season but it wasn't successful, cows can go in heat again, even weeks after the 'official' mating season has ended.

It was quite cold as snow started flying.
