It's amazing how there's no such thing as "the brown bear" when it comes to appearance.
Sure, they share features such as the shoulder hump and big paws with long claws for digging, but I'm always surprised how different they can look otherwise.
Different color fur so they're not always "brown."
Different sizes.
Different faces which was most surprising to me.
I spent another four months in Alaska this past year during the summer months to photograph the bears hunting for salmon. You can find the article I wrote my experiences here, published by Destination:Wildlife.
After a few weeks of seeing at least 13 distinct brown bears fishing for salmon where I was setup with my camera, I started recognizing individual bears and giving them names for easy remembering.
Some bears have the face of a gorilla, others the face and mane of a lion. The one below, who I photographed while he was fishing for salmon, looked like an older bear with very baggy eyes!
What would you name this bear?
P.S. I'm doing a 16x20 fine art print giveaway: if you haven't entered yet, there's still time. It's totally free, find it here: https://www.vangophotos.com/blog/2023/1/print-giveaway
