Very sad news from Jackson Hole today ... Grizzly 399 has died.
She was struck and killed by a car on Tuesday evening in the Snake River Canyon, south of Jackson and outside of Grand Teton National Park. There is no news about the fate of her yearling cub, Spirit.
She lived a record-setting life in and around Jackson Hole, becoming the oldest known grizzly bear to reproduce in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. She gave birth to her last cub, Spirit, about 1 year and 10 months ago. Spirit was hopefully not involved in the fatal accident and is now on her own, about 7 months before her mom would have kicked her out (at 2.5 years of age). The last time they were seen, Spirit looked very big and healthy. Fingers crossed she'll have the instincts to find a suitable and safe den in a few weeks’ time.
It’s hard to believe she won’t be showing up at Pilgrim Creek any longer, or swimming the river at Jackson Lake dam …
