Spirit

Spirit, daughter of grizzly 399, on one of the last occasions that I photographed her last cub.

This spring into summer, there have been a few sightings of young solitary bears in 399's area around Pilgrim Creek.  We all want to believe this is Spirit as it would mean that after last October's vehicle collision that killed 399, Spirit made it through his first winter alone.  Without DNA evidence, however, there is no way to know if Spirit is this young bear in the Pilgrim area of the National Park.

Around July 20-21, rumors started flying that a young grizzly had been captured at the end of the Pilgrim Creek dirt road, DNA tested and found to be Spirit. Because DNA testing can take anywhere from months to years, I found the story hard to believe. Read the Cowboy State Daily article here.

If/when the Interagency Grizzly Study Team does release the results of the DNA test, it is possible it'll be determined to be an offspring of 399, but until then we'll have to hope for the best.
