Bitter Brush

October 30, 2026  •  Leave a Comment

This time of the year, the rut has finished and moose; having run out of food along the riverbanks; are moving out into the open sage brush flats of Grand Teton National Park.  Here they feast on the bitter brush plants that grow among the sage.

I made this picture in late October a few years ago.  This year, we haven't had any substantial snowfall yet in the lower elevations of Jackson Hole (unlike Yellowstone where it's been snowing pretty intensely these past few days) so the moose's favorite areas around the Gros Ventre campground and the warm springs look pretty dull and grey at the moment.
