Salmon Run

Having grown up in western Europe (Belgium to be exact), witnessing a salmon run wasn't an easy thing to do, for the obvious reason that there are no salmon runs there.  I've been blessed the previous two years to find myself in Alaska during the Summer months to observe the bears and wolves feasting on the salmon.

This Summer, I used Nikon's underwater camera; the Coolpix; to make a short documentary of the salmon run.  The salmon in the documentary are pink (or humpy) salmon, with the occasional chum (or dog) salmon swimming through the picture.  Given the fast river current and the near-freezing temperatures, I am amazed at how seemingly effortless these salmon are swimming.

You can recognize the male salmon by their curved jaws and canine teeth.  They swim near a female in the hopes of being the male that gets to fertilize the female's eggs.  The males develop these giant teeth and jaws during spawning season to bite and fight with the other males.
