Valles Caldera National Preserve
A prairie dog prepares for winter.
A few months ago, I spent time photographing a colony of prairie dogs in the recently created National Preserve at Valles Caldera near Santa Fe, New Mexico. A volcano still considered active by geologists, Valles Caldera is a great place to see prairie dogs, coyotes (who hang around the meadows to hunt them) and large elk herds.
These furry creatures; family of the squirrel; don't hibernate and stack up on food to make it through the cold winter months at this altitude. The peaks in the National Preserve reach up to 11,000 feet (3.400 meters).
