Monarch butterflies are some pretty amazing animals.
They migrate as far north as Canada in summer and as far south as Mexico during winter. Not one and the same butterfly: they complete this migration over several generations!
The one in the picture was heading south as we found them on the Texas - Mexico border along Lake Amistad ('friendship').
My usual lens for small creatures (the Nikkor 600mm f4) isn't the best lens for these fast moving creatures. It's simply too big and heavy. The Nikkor 200-500 f5.6 is the perfect lens I found for these butterflies. It's smaller, lighter, still has enough focal length to blur the busy background and the short focusing distance allows you to be about 2 meters/yards away and fill the frame with a big monarch butterfly at 500mm.
