Grizzly 399 in Wild Flower Meadow

October 27, 2020  •  3 Comments

It's almost time for the grizzlies in the Tetons and Yellowstone to start their annual hibernation.

Living on the road full-time, I recently left Jackson Hole as temperatures dropped into negative territory. But, I'm lucky that I got to see grizzly 399 and her four cubs a few days before I hit the road.

The 4 cubs looked great: they have grown quite a lot since I photographed them in June and look like proper 'mini-grizzlies' now covered in fluffy coats.

Grizzly mom 399 is pictured below - I made this photograph earlier this summer - amongst the wild flowers in the Tetons.  She looked great earlier this summer, however, it was my impression when I saw her last that she needs to put on some more weight before she decides to call it a night!

For those familiar with the area, she usually hangs out in the area in the northern section of the national park but recently she has been spotted all the way south to the town of Wilson.  Looks like she's working hard - with her cubs in tow - to find more sustenance.  The latest news is that she is looking better but ideally she'll stumble onto some more food before going to her winter den; be it a wolf kill or a gut pile left behind by hunters.  If you have seen her recently, please keep me posted so I can share it with everyone here.

Pictures from my recent encounter with her and the cubs are on their way ... I literally have thousands of pictures to edit and process.  Not looking forward to all the editing; I MUCH prefer to be out in the field. :-)

If you are looking for greeting cards for the upcoming Holiday season, I just put my greeting cards of 399 and other Grand Teton images on sale.  They are blank, folded, heavy card stock greeting cards for any occasion and come with envelopes!

Thanks for the update, Jorn. This magnificent Queen has grabbed our hearts, we are all pulling for her and her four cubs. It is amazing that she brought all four safely through their first year. Your cards are wonderful. Thank you for bringing 399 into our lives and for giving us all a way to share her with others.
